Mathematics for Entrance Exams: Build Speed Without Skipping Concepts

Students often ask for shortcuts to solve mathematics questions quickly. Speed matters in an entrance test, but reliable speed comes from strong concepts, accurate calculations and repeated practice—not from memorising tricks without understanding.

Important: Admission eligibility, syllabus, dates and test instructions may change by admission year. Always verify the current official prospectus or information bulletin before applying.

1. Strengthen number sense first

Practise place value, estimation, mental addition and subtraction, multiplication facts and division relationships. Ask students to estimate an answer before calculating. Estimation helps identify mistakes and builds confidence.

2. Understand fractions and decimals

Use visual models, number lines and real-life examples such as sharing food or measuring ingredients. Teach equivalent fractions, comparison and conversion only after the underlying idea is clear. Then move to written calculations and word problems.

3. Read word problems carefully

Ask the student to underline what is known, identify what must be found and decide which operation or sequence of operations is appropriate. Encourage drawing a simple diagram or writing a short plan before calculating.

4. Use shortcuts only when the reasoning is clear

Mental calculation methods can save time, but students should understand why they work and when they apply. A shortcut that is used in the wrong situation can create errors. First solve correctly using a familiar method, then learn a faster valid approach.

5. Practise accuracy before speed

Begin with untimed practice to establish correct methods. Introduce short timed sets after the student can solve the topic accurately. Review errors by category: concept, operation, copying, reading or time pressure.

6. A simple weekly mathematics cycle

Frequently asked questions

Are maths tricks necessary for entrance exams?

No trick replaces conceptual understanding. Useful mental methods can improve efficiency when students understand the underlying mathematics.

How can a child reduce calculation mistakes?

Encourage neat working, estimation, checking operations and reviewing common error patterns.

Should timed practice begin immediately?

Start with understanding and accuracy. Add timed practice gradually as the student becomes comfortable with the concepts.
